Intern Counselling Services

What are Intern Counsellors?

Interns, or students, are counsellors who have completed all of their classes and course work to obtain their Masters degree in counselling or social work. In order to graduate and apply for their licensing, they need practical hours working with clients. This is done under the direct supervision of a qualified and experienced therapist who meets with the student regularly.

Benefits of Seeing an Intern Counsellor

There are many benefits to seeing an intern or student counsellor. Some include:

The most up to date training

Fresh eyes and fresh energy

Smaller case load

Direct supervision by fully qualified therapist

Affordable rates, about half of what a fully qualified therapists charge

Online or In-Person, You Choose.

Interns have the ability to meet you online or in-person at our Kelowna location.

Don’t want to book online? Have some questions? You are always welcome to email our Office Manager at hello@clarityokanagan.com or call our office at 250-300-6860

What Sets our Interns Apart?

All of our interns are anti-racist, anti-oppressive, client centred, LGBTQ2+ allied, and inclusive.

Work from multiple theoretical orientations to ensure clients find the fit and approach they are looking for.

Our interns have dedicated supervisors who are happy to meet with clients, sit in on sessions, and connect regularly (often daily) with their students.

Interns at Clarity Okanagan are hired with their interests in mind. Having students who are passionate about the topics they work with means clients get to see an intern who is enthusiastic and engaged about the work they do.

What do I do if someone I am seeing does not feel like a good fit after some sessions together?

This happens! We encourage you to discuss this with your counsellor directly but if you prefer to speak with their supervisor or admin, that is always an option too. We can work to correct the issue or pair you with someone new if that feels like the best option to move forward. We will support all of our clients in any way we can.

Does online counselling work?

Research shows (especially in current pandemic-times) that online counselling options can be just as helpful and meaningful as in-person sessions. If you are hesitant, that is fine! We do recommend trying it if your counsellor only has online options; if you hate it, we can discuss our alternative options from there.
